THE JOB  
  • Historians research, analyze, and explain past events, people and their endeavors. Some historians help study and preserve archival materials, artifacts, and historic buildings and sites.
  • They look to many sources of information, including government records, periodicals, photographs, interviews, films, and unpublished manuscripts such as personal diaries and letters.
  • Historians usually study a particular era, country or region, or field, such as social, intellectual, political or diplomatic history.
SKILLS  
  • Employers look for competence in written and oral communications and technical expertise.
  • They look for completion of successful research projects and the ability to think logically.
  • Historians interested in teaching should possess a knowledge of the methods involved in learning and instruction.
EDUCATION  
  • A PhD is required for most positions at colleges and universities as well as the top nonacademic positions.
  • Opportunities for those with bachelor's degrees are generally limited to supportive roles, such as research assistants.
OUTLOOK  
  • The number of jobs for historians is expected to grow about as fast as the average through 2008. Prospects are best for those with advanced degrees and who teach.
